DryStack is a modular brick construction system developed to support circular and demountable building practices. By replacing conventional mortar-based masonry with a mechanical stacking method, the system enables brick façades and walls to be assembled, disassembled and reused throughout multiple building cycles.
The system is designed to work with a wide range of existing brick types, provided they meet specified requirements for dimensional tolerances and material hardness. This material flexibility allows architects and builders to select bricks according to project-specific aesthetic and technical requirements while integrating them into a circular construction approach.
To prepare the bricks for use within the system, a series of precision-drilled openings are added to each unit. These modifications enable the integration of the DryStack connector layer, which mechanically links the bricks together without the need for traditional cement mortar. Depending on project requirements, façades can be constructed with or without visible joints.
The dry-stacking approach simplifies both installation and future disassembly. Prepared bricks are delivered to site together with the connector elements and assembled by trained contractors or project teams familiar with the system. The elimination of mortar reduces wet trades on site and allows masonry elements to be dismantled at the end of their service life without damaging the individual bricks.
By enabling the recovery and reuse of masonry components, DryStack extends the lifespan of building materials and reduces construction waste. The system also decreases reliance on cement-based mortars, which are associated with significant carbon emissions in conventional construction. As a result, DryStack contributes to material efficiency, adaptability and lower environmental impact within the built environment.
Suitable for façade systems and masonry applications, DryStack combines traditional clay brick aesthetics with contemporary principles of circular construction, offering an alternative approach to reusable and demountable masonry architecture.
