Beyond Space Designs Holcim Headquarters with Innovative Materials
In Zug, Switzerland, Beyond Space is redeveloping the headquarters of Holcim. The project covers 9,000m² and is planned in several stages. The first phase will be finished in spring 2025.
Innovative Materials in the Workplace
The design actively integrates Holcim’s own materials into the office spaces. Meeting rooms and other areas use 3D printed concrete elements, recycled wood–concrete composites, and ultra-high tensile concrete plates. By using these technologies in a real building, the project demonstrates how experimental materials can perform in practice.
Focus on Circular and Efficient Construction
The chosen materials support circular and efficient building methods. For example, recycled wood–concrete composites extend the use of resources that would otherwise go to waste. Ultra-high tensile concrete plates make structures thinner and more durable. In addition, 3D printed components show how digital fabrication can reduce waste and allow more precise designs. Together, these applications illustrate ongoing changes in concrete technology.
Relevance for Designers
For architects and interior designers, the Holcim headquarters shows how material research can directly shape work environments. The project also offers product designers insights into the use of hybrid composites and precision manufacturing. As a result, the building functions not only as an office but also as a reference for future material applications.
